Why choose UHC Global Care Plans?

Trusted. Affordable. Comprehensive.

  • Access to thousands of in-network doctors and hospitals through the UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus PPO network

Whether you're on campus or traveling, UHC Global Care gives you peace of mind and access to care when you need it most.

Does this plan meet the J-1 visa requirements?

Yes. All Global Care plans offered through this site meet or exceed the U.S. Department of State requirements for J-1 visa holders. This includes:

  • A minimum of $100,000 in medical benefits per accident or illness
  • Coverage for medical evacuation and repatriation of remains
  • Deductibles and copays within the regulatory limits
  • No exclusions for pre-existing conditions after a brief waiting period (depending on plan)

These plans are specifically designed to ensure compliance for international scholars and exchange visitors.

Can I use this plan at the UCLA Health Center?

No. Scholars cannot access services at the UCLA Arthur Ashe Student Health & Wellness Center. Only students enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan can access these services.

Who is eligible to enroll?

This plan is available to international students and scholars on a J-1 visa who are participating in a program at UCLA. You must be actively engaged in academic or research activities and not have U.S. permanent resident status. Eligible dependents (spouse or children under 26) can also participate.

How do I enroll in the plan?

Enrollment is done online. Just visit our UCLA Global Care Enrollment Portal, select your plan, and complete the secure checkout. Payment is required at the time of enrollment. No school approval is needed.

When does my coverage begin?

Coverage starts on the effective date you select during enrollment. You will receive a confirmation email along with your ID card once your application is processed and payment is received.

How do I get my ID card?

You will receive a digital ID card by email shortly after your enrollment is approved. You can also access your ID card 24/7 via the UHCSR MyAccount portal or mobile app.

How do I find a doctor?

You can search for in-network doctors, hospitals, and specialists through the UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus PPO network at uhcsr.com/myaccount. Use in-network providers whenever possible to reduce out-of-pocket costs.

Can I speak with a doctor or mental health professional virtually?

Yes. Your plan includes free access to HealthiestYou by Teladoc:

  • General medical: Talk to a doctor 24/7 by phone or video
  • Mental health: Schedule virtual sessions with a therapist or psychiatrist 7 days a week

All services are at $0 cost for enrolled students.
Call 1 (855) 870-5858 or download the HealthiestYou app to get started.

Are prescriptions covered?

Yes. Prescription medications are covered through the UnitedHealthcare Pharmacy (UHCP) network. Just show your insurance ID card at a participating pharmacy. Copay amounts vary by plan.

What if I have an emergency?

All Global Care plans include coverage for:

  • Emergency room treatment
  • Ambulance services
  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Repatriation of remains

These are essential services for international travelers and are required for J-1 visa compliance.

Do I need a referral to see a specialist?

No. You can see in-network specialists without a referral from a primary care provider.

How do I file a claim?

Most in-network providers bill UnitedHealthcare directly. If you need to submit a claim yourself:

  1. Log in to uhcsr.com/myaccount
  2. Complete the claim form and attach receipts and documentation
  3. Submit online or through the mobile app
